Highways 49 and 26 in Stone County heavily impacted by severe flooding

STONE COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV)- Dangerous conditions on some of Stone County’s major highways continue this evening.

Many streets in Wiggins became impassable Thursday morning as the rain moved through.

In Perkinston, Highway 49 at Red Creek was closed in both directions as water came up to the tops of the bridges there, but MHP officials tell us both directions are back open this evening.

As water came up to the top of the bridge and similar situations played out along Highway 26 East in the White’s Crossing community. Stone County Sheriff Todd Stewart said, “Well it’s been a hot mess since we been getting all of that weather. We’ve had trees down; we got roads still flooded. We still got nine emergency calls waiting to be rescued via boat but thank God we have help from neighbors. As far as the community, Jackson County, we got help from up north so we’re just very thankful but we still got people trapped in their houses. Roads that are closed due to flooding. So, we’re slowly but surely trying to get everybody rescued that needs to be rescued. We probably will get another band of rain talking with the EMA director, we’re probably going to have another band of rain. So, I would just advise everyone to stay in-place if there’s no need to get out, do not get out on the roadways because if you’re out on the roadways and you run into a road closure, you’re doing nothing but hampering the first responders that are out here trying to get people out the homes and rescue them.”
