Thanksgiving fire safety

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving and that means a lot of time to spend with family and friends and delicious food, but it also means a lot of fires.

News 25 spoke with Gulfport Fire Chief Mike Beyerstedt who says Thanksgiving Day is the number one day of the year for kitchen fires. He says most of these fires stem from unattended cooking.

Even though you may be distracted by family, you should never leave any food alone while cooking, even for things like the turkey which can take hours.

Make sure to keep an eye on the kids in the kitchen as well since there will be so many dishes going at once that can be hot and harmful.

Chief Beyerstedt says using a turkey fryer can be one of the most dangerous factors. Chief Beyerstedt said, “The turkey fryers are very dangerous if they are not used properly. Make sure you use them outside, not on the deck and make sure you’ve measured the oil and you’re not putting a wet turkey in there. Be very careful with those. Thanksgiving is always a busy day for us.”

Chief Beyerstedt says to make sure to check your smoke detectors before you start cooking to ensure your Thanksgiving is safe and happy.
