Health and Fitness Week at USM Gulf Park Campus

Flu season is just around the corner. USM Gulf Park Campus in Long Beach is already preparing to fight the virus.
The college has deemed this week ‘health and fitness week.’ Today, they hosted a vaccination station in their health center. The center was open for students to tour the facility and also receive a flu shot for just $30.While you can come down with the flu all year long, flu season will open up in just over a month.
Meagan Jernigan is a nurse at USM’s health center and she has been administrating flu vaccines today. She says it’s important to be educated about the flu shot before you get it. “One thing that a lot of people don’t understand or know about the flu vaccine is that it’s not a live virus so it can’t actually make you sick. All it is is giving your body the formula to effectively fight against the virus. If you’re over the age of 65 or you have other risk factors that increase your chances of getting the flu, we recommend that you do receive a flu shot.”
Tomorrow, USM will host a lunch and learn on self-care and stress management. Their health and fitness week will last through Friday and the events are specifically for USM students, faculty and staff.
