9/10 – Payton’s Sunday Night Forecast

Hurricane Irma continues to be the main focus. Irma made its second landfall Sunday in Marco Island, FL at 2:35 pm local time as a category three storm. It continues to move to the north, but is now a category two hurricane. The storm is expected to decrease in intensity as it makes its way across Florida. Irma will continue to move to the NNW over the eastern portions of the Florida Panhandle throughout Monday and Tuesday dropping flooding rains and bringing very strong winds to Florida. Here in South Mississippi we still expect minimal effects from the storm. Gusty winds will be the primary concern on Monday. There is a Small Craft Advisory, so being on the water is not recommended. As Irma continues to move away from the area, our weather will be quite nice with north winds and drier air staying in the area. We could see a very isolated shower on Wednesday and Thursday as Irma moves to our north, but no widespread rain is expected.
