Introducing our WXXV Student Athlete of the Week, Biloxi’s Mason Fields!

They call this guy “The Flash”, but he’s much more than just his speed. He’s a dual-sport athlete for the red and black, well-known on the flag football field, and I truly believe his best days are ahead of him. Get to know Biloxi Junior High’s very own, Mason Fields!

“You have to protect the flag and you can’t stiff arm. It’s not like normal football, it’s much faster . That’s why I love it so much because it really brings out the inner athlete in you and you have to adjust. You’ve got to adjust to things that other people aren’t able to do. That’s what flag football is all about.”

That was Biloxi’s very own Mason “The Flash” Fields, but his nickname is far more than just about his speed.

“I feel like he’s a really underrated superhero because everybody is worried about Batman and Superman and stuff like that, but everybody wants to be fast,” Fields said. “That’s what I want to be, really fast, so I just love him. He’s just a role model even though he’s not really real.”

One thing that is real is Field’s work ethic. At just 10-years-old, he was working on his form with PVC pipes. Now an eighth grader, Field’s is closer and closer to the athlete he’s always wanted to be.

“I just really got tired of not being able to do the things I saw other people doing,” said Fields. “I’m so hard on myself because I want to get there and that’s what not a lot of kids have is work ethic and that’s what I’ve learned at a young age. You have to work to get somewhere in life. Nothing is given to you, so you’ve just got to work. I’ve noticed how other people were ahead of me and when I started working and working, I got ahead of them, and that’s why I’m able to do the things I’m doing right now.”

The things this 15-year-old is doing now will blow your mind! Not only was Fields the first Mississippian to win silver at the USA Football Junior Olympics Select Bowl for flag football last year, but next week he’s shooting for the stars, or should I say rings?

“My dad took me to Tampa and that’s when it all happened. I got MVP of the Select Bowl,” Fields said. “They said I wouldn’t make it to the first year of trials, that’s what my coach said also that I wouldn’t make it to the first year of trials and look where we’re at now. We’re looking to make the Olympic Team this year and I know I can.”

On March 13th-16th, Fields will be in Charlotte, North Carolina giving it his all to earn a spot on Team USA’s Olympic Flag Football team. We cannot wait to see all the incredible things ‘The Flash’ will accomplish in the years to come. Don’t blink, or you might miss him!
