State House passes Tax Reform Bill

The State House passes its first major bill of this legislative session as lawmakers continue to debate the future of tax reform in Mississippi.

The Build Up Mississippi Act passed the lower chamber by a vote of 88-24.

Specifically, this legislation reduces the income tax over a period of ten years at which point it would be eliminated.

The grocery tax would also be trimmed year after year as well.

The bill also adds a general 1.5% sales tax for both cities and counties that local governments can vote to opt out of.

This bill now moves to the State Senate for consideration.
