Gulf Coast students win Mississippi Stock Market Game

Twice a year, Mississippi students in 4th through 12th grade can compete in the Mississippi stock market game.

This game is a simulation of a real market and gives students the opportunity to dive into the world of finance and investment.

One team, made up of four 8th graders from North Gulfport Elementary and Middle School, began with 100-thousand dollars to invest in the simulation over a 13-week period.

By the time the game ended, the students doubled their assets and outperformed the S&P 500 by 22%.

They placed second in the middle school division.

Aaron Dunklin, assistant principal said, “If I think back, if I had started investing in stocks and learning a little bit more about how to do it when I was in the 8th grade, I think about how much more I would be prepared for the financial world.”

“At first, we didn’t really know what to do,” said on teammate, Alexis Curry. “We were kind of panicking then. Then we knew how to do it… and we did it!”

Two groups at Harper McCaughan Elementary also placed. These students will travel to Jackson to be recognized for their achievements.
