I-110 S closed due to fire in Harrison County
Biloxi Fire Department is investigating a fire that started Tuesday night on Bayview Avenue under I-110 when an 18-wheeler trailer caught fire.
MDOT District Construction Engineer Scott White said the trailer was parked under the bridge by the city and it contained the city’s traffic control equipment.
White said it is believed the trailer was set on fire. Biloxi Fire Department is leading that investigation.
City officials said the fire started about 7:30 p.m. and was extinguished in about 30 minutes. The city sent out a Tweet about 8 p.m. that the fire department was working a fire on Bayview at I-110. Both lanes of the interstate were closed at that time.
By 9:48 p.m., traffic was opened to northbound traffic on to I-110. At 1:43 a.m., the city said northbound I-110 was open to traffic, while southbound lanes remain closed south of the Bayview Exit and will remain closed indefinitely.
White said the fire got hot enough that the concrete under the bridge crumbled to the point that reinforcement material can be seen.
“We sent the bridge engineer down last night and he’s working on his initial report now. The Bridge division out of Jackson will come down today, but for safety reasons, the southbound lanes of I-110 will remain closed,” White said.
MDOT already has been in contact with the Federal Highway Administration and they are working together on an emergency bridge repair project.
