New pathway highlighting Pascagoula’s history unveiled at Lighthouse Park

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (WXXV)- Pascagoula’s rich history now has a new home along the city’s waterfront.

Leaders officially unveiled a historical pathway designed to take residents and visitors through the people, industries, and events that helped shape the city.

A new piece of Pascagoula history is now on display at Lighthouse Park under the high-rise bridge.

The city officially unveiled ‘The Story of Pascagoula: A Historical Pathway.” The pathway takes visitors through the city’s history from its earlier settlements along the river to the thriving coastal community Pascagoula is today. Mayor Jay Willis said, “Excited today to unveil our heritage pathway, telling the story of the history of Pascagoula. We have highlighted nine different eras beginning with the Native Americans who chose this spot to live and thrive for so many generations and then all the way to present day. So many eras having different characteristics, this allows us to tell the story of Pascagoula which is an amazing story that does hit all of the points. It’s located at Lighthouse Park just beneath the high-rise bridge and on the riverfront. We are so excited about this location and what it has become for Pascagoula.”

The project highlights the people, industries, and major events that played a role in Pascagoula’s development.

It also gives residents and visitors an opportunity to learn more about the community’s roots while enjoying the waterfront. “Great things are happening in Pascagoula. It’s visible downtown, it’s visible all across our city. We believe the best days are ahead of us.”

Officials say the goal is to keep Pascagoula’s story alive and give future generations a place to connect with the people and events that helped build the city.
