A second officer was killed in a standoff at a residence in Brandon before the situation was resolved, according to police.

The standoff began about 1:45 a.m. as a domestic dispute that turned into a hostage situation at a home in the Crossgates neighborhood, according to Brandon Police Chief Wayne Dearman. When officers arrived, a subject in the house fired on officers, wounding one.

The Brandon Police Officer, who suffered “significant injuries” was stable and talking.

After hours of a standoff, SWAT was able to rescue the hostage from the house on Terrapin Hill Road. The standoff continued until after 9:30 a.m., when shots were again fired.

A Madison police officer, Randy Tyler, and the subject, identified as 22-year-old Gabriel Matthew Wilson, were both fatally wounded in the exchange, according to MBI.

Tyler was a 7-year veteran of the Madison police force. He was a member of the department’s Special Response Team and was the field training coordinator for Madison. He also was a supervisor in the Narcotics Division.

Tyler retired as chief of the Ridgeland Police Department before joining Madison.

Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is assessing the incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.
