7/7 – Payton’s Sunday Night Tropical Update

We are starting the workweek off hot, humid and a chance for showers and t-storms each afternoon. Not a big change to the forecast. Our attention then turns to the tropics. The National Hurricane Center give a medium chance of tropical development in the northern Gulf of Mexico later this week. This is all thanks to a disturbance currently moving through northern Georgia. It will move over the northern gulf by Wednesday and could be a focal point for tropical development. While some type of development is looking more likely the big question is where does this thing go once it develops.  It is still too early to say impacts or track of this system due to the complex forecast. A few scenarios…1) The storm head west. It this is the cast it could try to become a tropical storm and we could see impacts in South Mississippi. 2) The system goes east and impacts are little/none in South Mississippi. Because of this difficult forecast it’s hard to know exact impacts here on the coast. We’ll continue to monitor this, but likely won’t have a good idea what this thing is going to do until we see a low pressure center of the Gulf of Mexico. In the meantime review your hurricane plan and check back daily for updates.
