Statistics show that someone in the world needs a blood transfusion every two seconds.
It’s World Blood Donor Day and because of the growing need for blood donations the City of Diamondhead hosted a community blood drive today.
The event lasted from 11 to 6:30 and in that time people could head to City Hall and donate.
For helping save lives people walked away with an exclusive World Blood Donor t-shirt and a lunch box filled with other prizes.
Blood Center Coastal Region Coordinator Gina Necaise says blood donations are a vital act of service that has the power to give life to those desperately in need. “Blood cannot be manufactured. It’s very important that we keep up our blood supply. We need to collect about 300 units a day to service the hospitals that we supply. Right now, we’re currently experiencing an urgent need for type-O blood, not only can you donate today, but you can continue to donate at other blood drives at our donor center.”
The next blood drive is Thursday at Lynn Meadows Discovery Center from 9 to 2.
