1/14 – Jeff’s “DANGEROUS COLD Arriving/Winter Weather Advisory” Sunday Night Forecast

A fairly tame one we’ve had this weekend will give way to a challenging week at times for the Mississippi Coast. DANGEROUSLY COLD temperatures arrive to the area by the middle of this week. But first, a Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from 9 PM Monday (from 6 PM in Pearl River County) until 9 AM Tuesday for George, Stone, and Pearl River County.

Rain arrives tomorrow evening and a transition to icing chances will begin from northern/western areas to farther east as the night progresses Monday night. There will be the potential for light freezing rain/freezing drizzle to create a glaze up to one-tenth of an inch of ice accumulation for areas inland. This does not lead to issues with trees and power lines but it is enough to make travel hazardous.

Other portions of our area north of the interstate, outside of the current alert, could see issues with icing *if* cold air rushes in quicker than anticipated. The biggest impact will be slick spots primarily on bridges and overpasses, with a higher possibility of more widespread road impacts farther north and west. With winter weather forecasts, fine details become much clearer within 24 hours.

The cold temperatures this week will also be a major issue. Tuesday morning’s temperatures alone will be quite cold with 20s/lower-30s feeling like the single digits to the teens due to gusty winds. Thankfully, Temperatures will warm above freezing during the day Tuesday and cold/dry air should evaporate any remaining water from precip the night before.

It will be a very cold day Tuesday with temperatures struggling to warm to 40 degrees, and it feeling like the 20s the entire day. The coldest night of the week will be Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Actual temperatures will be in the teens and wind chills will be in the single digits. Wind Chill alerts and Hard Freeze Watches/Warnings will be hoisted tomorrow.
