Youth Court Needs New Detention Center
Long-awaited solutions to problems associated with the Harrison County Youth Court and Juvenile Detention Center are finally being discussed after a recent grand jury report.
The Harrison County Juvenile Detention Center is in Biloxi but all its services are done in a separate building in Gulfport. The youth court is hoping to relocate to the old health department, right across the street from the Biloxi Detention Center. Youth court Judge Margaret Alfonso tells News 25 the youth court has two goals: for the court and the detention center to be on one campus and for a new youth detention center that is up-to-date with technology and has more space for the kids. “The facility right now, as the grand jury commented on, it’s the best you can make of it. I mean, they comment it’s in clean condition, it’s just the facility itself is extremely old. It was the old Biloxi jail for years.”
The Harrison County Grand Jury report said county supervisors should visit the juvenile detention center and make funding to build a new center a priority. This would greatly reduce liabilities and the costs of transporting the children between buildings.
