Wings of Freedom Tour

The Wings of Freedom Tour is a tour to honor the sacrifices made by our veterans who allow us to enjoy our freedom. With more than 2,900 airport visits across the country, Gulfport-Biloxi International was next on their list.

It’s not a bird and it’s not your average plane, these are WWII bomber planes or ‘the Wings of Freedom’ right here in South Mississippi. “The Collings Foundation is basically an educational foundation. We’re a traveling air museum. We travel around the country for ten months. Behind us is the one I fly, it’s the B-17 Flying Fortress, along with other airplanes.”

The B-24 Liberator is the only WWII plane of its kind still able to fly in the world today, along with the B-17, these planes were daylight bombers and according to Pilot Mac one of the reasons we won WWII.

Not many WWII airmen are still alive to tell the story, but these bomber planes play homage to their bravery and heroism all across the country. “It does a world of good for them. It brings back some great memories. You can sit around and listen to some of the great stories they tell that even their families didn’t know about until they came out here.”

These historic treasures will be parked in Gulfport through Wednesday, a real life history lesson and the chance to take a stroll back in time for many.

You can come out and see these flying pieces of history at the Million Air parking lot at the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon for as low as $15.
