West Harrison’s Otis Gates retiring as head coach of the girls basketball team

After working in public education for 29 years, West Harrison’s Otis Gates is retiring as head coach of the girls basketball team.

The Lady Hurricanes were able to win just one game this season, but the program isn’t that far removed from being at the top of the food chain.

In 2016, Gates and his Lady Canes were the class 5A runners up led by now Jackson State senior and Gillom Trophy finalist Ameshya Williams.

All part of a dominant run in region 8 from 2013 to 2016 and again in 2018 that saw the Lady Canes finish first in the regular season atop the district standings.
