W.A.V.E Candlelight Vigil for Assault Victims

It was a night full of emotion and tears. Coming just a week after the savage attack of an Ocean Springs woman, the community and a local group rallied together to fight against domestic and sexual violence and make sure it does not happen again.
After last week’s violent attack, one Ocean Springs woman’s life will never be the same. The community is rallying behind her to let her know she’s not alone. Haley Martin, a friend of the victim, said, “I’m here tonight to support the victim and to stand out for our community, say that we’re not going to put up with this kind of behavior.”
Haley Martin is just one member of the crowd who feels the need to join in with groups like Women Against Violence Everywhere and shed a light on the domestic abuse they believe is plaguing the Coast. Founder of W.A.V.E. Robin Cooley said, “We just want all those victims to know that there are people that care. Even people that don’t know them, they care. And we know that this could be anybody. This could be one of our friends, our sisters.”
The victim’s mother, who lives in Jackson, was not able to attend the emotional ceremony but she did not miss one second of it. “I will be facetiming her, so she can see what’s going on here tonight,” said family friend Terry Clifford.
While the victim’s mother was not in attendance, the victim’s father was and he brought tears to the crowd when he made a special announcement. “If everyone will turn around and face that way and wave. Our latest victim is right there and she loves all of y’all. She loves your support and all these women that’s been brutalized, they need your continued support. Thank you.”
Crime Stoppers was also at this vigil and tells News 25 they have had over a dozen tips from the community all working together to find the person responsible for this heinous crime.
