Taking care of pets in the cold weather

It’s also important not to forget about your furry friends as this cold weather comes to the Coast.

While the Mississippi Gulf Coast may not get traditional wintery weather, the change in temperature between fall and winter still affects us and our pets.

Pet owners are encouraged to bring their four-legged friends inside if you can. If you can’t bring your pets inside, make sure they have access to dry housing, hay, and blankets. HSSM Development Director Katie King said, “Just with the temperatures dropping, you might notice some shivering and you just want to make sure that they’re bundled up in bedding. And the best thing to do is just bring them inside and keep them warm and safe with you. If it is too cold for you, then it’s too cold for your pets.”

The Humane Society of South Mississippi is also accepting blanket donations to help keep the shelter animals warm this winter season. Drop offs can be made at the shelter Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
