Suspect in fatal shooting of Lt. Michael Boutte identified

At the request of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Hancock County.

On Monday, February 1st, 2021, deputies with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office responded to a welfare concern in the 30000 block of Earl C. Ladner Road.

Upon arrival, deputies encountered gunfire from Joseph Michael Rohrbacker. Hancock County Deputy Lt. Michael Boutte and Rohrbacker both sustained gunshot wounds during an exchange of gunfire.

Lt. Boutte and Rohrbacker were transported to a hospital in Louisiana where Lt. Boutte later succumbed to his injuries.

Rohrbacker is receiving treatment for his injuries and will be extradited to Mississippi to face charges.

MBI special agents are gathering evidence as part of this ongoing investigation and will share their findings with the local district attorney’s office.
