St. Michael’s Church Holds Katrina Memorial Service

Friday night, about a dozen people participated in a Hurricane Katrina memorial service at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Biloxi. For Catholics on the Point, St. Michaels served as a center for worship and community.

Most of the historic neighborhoods near the church were completely destroyed. Many of those who lived in the neighborhood have since relocated to other parts of the Coast. Several generations of Biloxi Catholics were present at the service.

Michael Kovacevich, a Biloxi resident, says, “Because this is where I was born and raised. This is my church. This is the people I know, who lived here and went through it and all. Gives me a chance to reminisce.”

After Katrina, St. Michaels underwent a three year repair project to restore the building.
