Southern Miss Pitcher Walker Powell named C-USA Pitcher of the Year
Throw a no-hitter and there’s a pretty good chance you’re the best player on the field.
In this case, USM’s Walker Powell is the best in the league, having been named Conference USA Pitcher of the Year.
In addition to his seven-inning no-hitter against Middle Tennessee, Powell led Southern Miss with five complete games, posting a record of 9-2 with a 2.56 ERA and 76 strikeouts across 77 plus innings.
The sixth-year senior now has 29 career victories, tied for second in program history, also leading all active Division I pitchers.
Another big award going to Conference USA Assistant Coach of the Year Christian Ostrander, the third time Southern Miss has won that award in seven tries.
For first team selections, the Golden Eagles have Powell and Reed Trimble as well as sophomore designated hitter Charlie Fischer and Friday night senior starter Hunter Stanley who had just as good of a case to make for pitcher of the year.
On the second team, it’s another Southern Miss trio, junior outfielder and lead off man Gabe Montenegro, freshman starting pitcher Ben Ethridge, and sophomore relief pitcher Ryan Och.
The all-freshman team includes Trimble and Ethridge.
