Schools are preparing for students to return

Have you ever wondered what is it that teachers do while kids are out of school for the summer? According to some teachers on the Coast, summer vacation is actually more work than the school year. News 25’s Gina Tomlinson takes us to an elementary school in Jackson County where teachers are preparing to return to class.
Twenty-four year-old Erin Fagin remembers playing teacher as a kid. Now her dream of having a classroom of her own is a reality as the brand new teacher prepares to welcome her very first class of kindergartners in the same school district she attended as a kid. “I’m anxious. I’m nervous, but I’m really excited. I think the parents can expect their children to come home happy and having something to tell them that they’ve learned today.”
In less than a week, it will be time for students to return to class and these empty halls at Central Elementary School will soon be full of kids. School Principal Angela Burch tells News 25 she’s counting down the days. “I’m excited to have students back in the building and teachers.”
Around 100 new teachers are joining the Pascagoula Gautier School District this year and even during summer vacations, teachers haven’t stopped working, building the upcoming curriculum, preparing lessons and undergoing education training. Pascagoula Gautier Schools Assistant Superintendent Belinda Dammen said, “Right now I have grade level meetings happening. Each of my grades comes over for a day and they go over anything that’s new from the state department. This year we have new science standards so they’re learning those.”
School officials say there are a few things parents should be doing to help their kids get ready for the upcoming school year, but they say the biggest thing is getting their kid back on schedule. “A lot of them been staying up late and sleeping late so get them back to that norm and of course always read with your child,” said Dammen.
Central Elementary will welcome their students back August 4th and for Principal Burch, it couldn’t come sooner. “It’s just been me and the custodians for a while so I’ve been a little lonely.”
