Salvation Army opening cold weather shelter

As we go into tonight, the Coast will see some very cold temperatures so it is important to bundle up.

That’s why along the Coast, cold weather shelters are opening, including the Salvation Army’s shelter in Gulfport. They will be opening their doors this afternoon at 4 p.m. Dinner and breakfast will both be provided.

You must be able to pass a breathalyzer test and be checked for weapons to ensure everyone’s safety before entering the shelter. Major Bradley Caldwell with the Gulf Coast Salvation Army said, “We feel that we cannot ignore human needs in conditions like this. So our hearts reach out, the love of God in us reaches out and says we welcome you and we want to help in whatever way we can. Our motto at one time was ‘Hearts of God, Hands of man’ and we want to reach our hands out and have something in them to offer besides just a hand shake.”

Doors will close to the shelter at 7 a.m. tomorrow. With the help of volunteers, they plan on opening their doors again if temperatures drop below 40 degrees.
