Restoring Saenger Theater
The City of Biloxi takes a step further in revitalizing the downtown area by funding the restoration for the historic Saenger Theater.
The city’s budget proposal includes about $600,000 for exterior work on the building. Phase one of the restoration involves replacing the roof and rooftop air conditioning units plus repairs to the entrance awning.
Crews plan to use waterproof brick on the outside to reduce the chances of moisture damage inside the theater. Cecilia Dobbs Walton with City of Biloxi Public Affairs said, “Twenty thousand to 30 thousand people a year come into the building so it is very used, of course it’s in the historic downtown district, it’s a visual arts center for all types of arts that come in and use this building so the mayor just wants to give it the much needed care that it needs.”
The design work should be complete by the end of this year. The City of Biloxi will then take bids for the exterior work around the beginning of next year. The Saenger Theater was built back in 1929 and opened in 1930.
