Recruitment Numbers on the Rise for Gulfport PD
The Gulfport Police Department released a recruitment video less than two weeks ago which not only grabbed the public’s attention online, but caused recruitment numbers to skyrocket.
Joining law enforcement was always in the back of Aaron Ashcraft’s mind, but he never pursed it. That is until he saw Gulfport Police Department’s new recruitment video. “When you start seeing it and you see it again, you’re like, you’re getting slapped in the face here: this is what I want to do,” said Ashcraft.
Ashcraft is one of about 70 people who flocked to the police station in the past two weeks after seeing the video. Sergeant Joshua Bromen, who is charge of recruitment, tells News 25 this is a major spike from previous months. “We were only seeing one or two contacts at the department. These are people from all walks of life who are just seeing our video, feeling the challenge, answering the calling, saying ‘you know what, I saw this is as a sign.’”
Not only have numbers jumped in January, but those who come in bring family members with them. “I’ve got a wife and three kids so you don’t want to get two or three months down the road into it and it’s too much for them. You want them to be on the same page as you and know this is what you do. This is what you love and continue to go forward with a great career,” said Ashcraft.
The hiring process is not a walk in the park. You fill out an application, take a civil service and PT test, go through an oral interview board, background check, voice analysis, and psychiatric exam, but some feel this life choice is meant for them. “Thirty years down the line where do I see myself? I can see myself here,” said Ashcraft.
