Reactions to planned development at the site of former Broadwater Beach Hotel
A proposed development at the former Broadwater Beach Hotel site has the City of Biloxi and local groups excited for more economic development.
There’s a sense of excitement in Biloxi over the proposed entertainment complex at the former Broadwater Beach Hotel site. Vincent Creel with the City of Biloxi said, “It’s going to be in a cherished location here in Biloxi. That site was once the flagship of tourism in South Mississippi.”
With this week’s announcement from Dakia Entertainment Hospitality and Broadwater Development, plans are in the works to develop a 1.2 billion dollar facility, complete with a casino, indoor concert venue, and full-service hotel.
One key feature of this project is the redevelopment of the Broadwater Marina site. State tourism leaders like Linda Hornsby with the Mississippi Hotel and Lodging Association say this announcement may spark a new wave of development in surrounding areas. “I think you’ll see ensuing development, and if you drive along there now, there’s a lot of vacant property, and so I think you’ll see other development.”
The city hopes the developers’ emphasis on entertainment events and relationship with Universal Music Group brings even more headline events to the area. “Another entertainment venue like they’re looking to bring here is going to be 12,000 plus seats and they have access to top name musical artists in the world,” said Creel.
With a planned opening in 2023, the scope and size of the project has local leaders optimistic about the future. “Something that substantial, they don’t do that without really doing a lot of research and without feeling that it’s going to be successful,” said Hornsby.
