PreK4WARD expands in Harrison County

The United Way of South Mississippi’s PreK4WARD program has expanded in the Harrison County School District, preparing even more four-year-olds for kindergarten.
Pineville Elementary School is the latest Harrison County School to host a PreK4WARD classroom. A total of 20 four-year-old students get to attend the literacy based program at no cost after paying just the registration fee, thanks to designated donor funds that create grants through United Way.
This expansion comes at a time when Pineville Elementary has achieved one of the highest scores in the state on the latest kindergarten readiness test. Dr. Barbara Coatney with United Way of South Mississippi said, “For the parents, it gives them a place where they know that their child is safe and that the child is learning. For the school district, it increases the achievement for these children who are in our program because over the past three to four years they’ve tracked that achievement and they see that when they take those state tests that these children really perform well.”
Out of the three spots in Harrison County, Pineville is the only school still accepting students, but spots are filling up fast. For more information you can call the United Way of South Mississippi at 228-896-2213.
