Port City FC: Sounders hosting Hattiesburg FC
Despite stepping down as the head boys soccer coach at Gulfport High School to accept the women’s job at Pearl River Community College, Henrik Madsen is still taking the pitch as his old stomping grounds as the head man of Port City FC.
Now in their second season of existence, the Sounders are off to a 1-3-1 start to the 2019 campaign, but still have a lot of fight left as the reigning Gulf Coast Premiere League champions.
Next up for Port City is a rematch against Hattiesburg FC from their first game of the season in which the new kids on the block came out victorious 1-0.
Hattiesburg is one of three new teams to the GCPL this season, bringing the total from 15 to 18 and it’s already becoming quite the rivalry. “It’s a great rivalry. The first game was a really good game with a lot of great play and some really good players coming out of William Carey, both teams are full of William Carey players. Plus some of the local guys, so it’s been a fun rivalry so far. Hopefully lots of entertainment is what we’re aiming for, at least to try to entertain the crowd. And it’s to get our young players something to look at besides just the U-18 level, so we’re hoping to entertain and hopefully the kids will want to play in college when they see this.”
Saturday’s game against Hattiesburg FC will take place at Gulfport’s Herbert Wilson Recreation Center at 7 p.m.
