One person dead in officer-involved shooting in Gulfport

One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting early this morning in Gulfport.

Gulfport police say officers responded at about 1:40 a.m. to a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute in the 100 block of David Street.

The suspect was pronounced dead on scene.

Gulfport Police Chief Chris Ryle explains the details leading up to the discharge of the officer’s weapons. “Upon officer’s arrival it turned into a hostage situation at which point our officer engaged in dialogue. During the dialogue our officers engaged with the suspect who succumbed to his injuries.”

News 25 talked with Gulfport resident Yolanda Rivera, who has been living in the area for over 20 years. She’s never heard of anything like this happening in her neighborhood. “A lot of kids live here and next door is my in-laws and a couple that just moved in. I know that house over there has been here for almost 25 years.”

The Harrison County District Attorney’s Office has requested that the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation handle the investigation with the assistance of the Biloxi Police Department Crime Scene Unit.

This is a developing story and News 25 will provide more details as they become available.
