Old Jackson County Jail to Come Down
The old Jackson County Jail will be torn down. The old jail was originally built in 1979. Jackson County supervisors made the decision that the structure needs to come down at their meeting Monday.
Officials tell News 25 the old jail was overcrowded from its beginning and because beds were full, many inmates commonly slept on the floor.
Supervisors say Jackson County has well overgrown the old jail with the new jail housing about 400 inmates right now. District 1 Supervisor Barry Cumbest said, “It’s been a good jail for a lot of years, but the old jail was always overcrowded and the jail has become just old and just wouldn’t function anymore. It had a good bit of electrical problems, plumbing issues, all that type of stuff happens with an old structure over a period of years.”
Some of the building will be recycled and the newer portion will be kept for the sheriff’s department’s use.
