Ocean Springs city jail closing
Ocean Springs aldermen voted to close the city jail.
This decision comes after the city confirmed they were facing a budget deficit. Inmates will be transferred to the Jackson County Adult Detention Center.
Ocean Springs will now pay Jackson County about $35 a day per inmate instead of paying the $65 a day per inmate at the city jail.
Ocean Springs Mayor Shea Dobson tells News 25 all the cities in Jackson County are making the choice to move inmates to the county adult detention center as well. “It is just something that makes economic sense, something that will save all the cities in Jackson County money. We are still figuring out the amounts, but it is going to be a cost savings in the long run. Our current jail will just be used for various stuff. We will probably have some storage in there as well.”
The Jackson County Board of Supervisors will hold a meeting tonight to discuss the budget.
