NCBC delays opening, urges west side of base to shelter in place due to smoke from Canal Road fire

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV) — Officials with the Naval Construction Battalion Center said Tuesday the base will not open until 9 a.m. due to thick smoke from a large fire near Canal Road.

Gulfport Police have closed 28th Street from 59th Avenue to Klondyke Road due to the heavy smoke causing low visibility.

The west-side of the base is urged to shelter in place or move to the eastern side of base due to the thick smoke from the Canal Road fire.

Officials say the base is not in immediate danger from fire, just thick smoke that is expected to lift or thin throughout the morning.

For clear air, move to the Eastern side of the base. The Chapel has been opened for refuge.

If there is smoke in your area, turn HVAC systems off, stuff towels and blankets at the base of doors and windows to block smoke from entering.

For all personnel, due to visibility issues reporting to work is delayed until 9 a.m. The 28th Street Gate is still operating.

Youth Center patrons and personnel are moving to the CDC. Children that attend the Youth/SAC program should be dropped off at CDC.

If you have an actual fire in your home, call 9-1-1.
