Navy Gold Star Coordinator wins top award

The Navy Gold Star coordinator at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport has been awarded the designation of Navy Gold Star Coordinator of the Year.

The honor was bestowed on Emily Kolenda last month. The Navy Gold Star Program is the Navy’s official program that provides long-term support to surviving families of sailors who lost their lives while on active duty.

With only two years on the job in Gulfport, Kolenda has managed more than a thousand cases, including providing support for the 13 survivors of the USS Fitzgerald incident, providing updates, answering questions, and helping to coordinate the remembrance ceremony and family tour.
