Naval Construction Battalion Center holds preschool transition ceremony for Child Development Center students

Today, for the first time since the pandemic began, preschoolers at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport were able to attend their transition ceremony in-person at the Seabee Base.

Eleven students transitioned from preschool to kindergarten. Family and friends gathered to witness the students recite their colors, days of the week, months of the year, and continents.

Each child received a certificate of completion.

Lead Program Assistant Janice Richardson says this has been a challenging school year. “Well, this year has been really hard because a lot of our kids, the way we are with our center right now, the parents only bring them in if they are working and they are essential. So, a lot of our kids are week on, week off, or day on, day off. So, it’s been very hard because of COVID, trying to get all the kids together to be able to practice at one time, plus we are not allowed to combine classrooms. It’s been a challenge, but we made it through. We worked it out and we are here.”

Richardson says at the center kids learn basic Spanish skills, basic math skills, and self-help skills to prepare them for kindergarten.
