MS Senators Oppose USDA Proposal
Mississippi Senators Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker are among a bi partisan group who oppose a proposed U.S. Department of Agriculture rule regarding SNAP benefits that they say could limit food access in rural areas. The U.S.D.A. plans to increase the access to healthy food by requiring suppliers to stock certain type of food in order to be eligible to accept SNAP benefits. Compliance costs in these areas could prevent smaller shops from purchasing snap and without a larger retailer in the area, Senators say residents would suffer. A total of 45 senators have signed a letter to the U.S.D.A. opposing their proposal.
