Mother of the Year Award
With Mother’s Day approaching this weekend, the Biloxi Lions Club hosted their 64th annual Biloxi’s Mother of the Year award presentation. It turns out the nominations were so nice, they gave the award out twice.
A mother’s love will last a lifetime. This type of love and appreciation was shown for both Alicia Tarrant and Lehwmon Skrmetti at the 2018 Mother of the Year Award presentation in Biloxi. “It’s just an honor. It really is. There isn’t enough time in the day to get everything done, but this feels good,” said Tarrant.
Both recipients wear multiple hats in their lives. Skrmetti is a dedicated school teacher for the Nativity BVM Elementary School and Tarrant works with a variety of children on the Coast. “It seems like I’m a mom in a lot of the things that I do. I work with the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence, with the Boys and Girls Club, and with many nonprofit organizations and schools here on the Coast.”
Skrmetti was nominated by her husband who knows she represents the strength of a mother due to her second fight with colon cancer in four years. “I have a very special husband. He’s definitely a gift from God. He takes care of me in many different ways. It’s just another way of him saying he loves me.”
Alicia’s daughter nominated her for being selfless and always being there for her when she needs her the most. “I really love her. I thought this was a good opportunity to get her welcome to the public.”
Mothers tend to not want recognition for carrying so many responsibilities because the payoff is the respect and admiration from their loved ones. “Every day is worth it. Love your children and they will love you back. Smile at them and say I love you.”
