Mississippi Aquarium celebrating World Turtle Day

Sunday is World Turtle Day and Mississippi Aquarium is planning to celebrate with some of their animal ambassadors.

World Turtle Day is a way to bring awareness to the many different species of turtles as well as conservation efforts.

On Sunday, the Aquarium will have some of their ambassador turtles and animals out and about for visitors to see.

Aquarium staff members say World Turtle Day is especially important to them as they are currently involved in turtle rehabilitation and conservation. Vice President of Veterinary Services Alexa Delaune, DVM said, “One of our important conservation efforts that we’ve done so far is rehabilitating some Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles that cold-stunned up in the northeast. And they ran out of space, so we took in 25 turtles. We’ve been nursing them back to health, and we’ve been able to release some of them, but we’re going to continue nursing the sicker ones back, and we should have a turtle release later this summer.”

The Aquarium released the fourth beer in its conservation series at Gulfport’s Chandeleur Island Brewing Company. The Three Pillars ale represents the Aquarium’s education, conservation, and community efforts.
