MGCCC Cheer Heads to National Championship

Last night the Mississippi Gulf Coast cheer squad departed for Orlando, Florida and the College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship.
In preparation for MGCCC’s inaugural trip to the UCA and UDA nationals, the team performed its two and a half minute routine for the first time publicly.
Gulf Coast will be competing in small co-ed division two alongside East Mississippi Community College and nine other schools. The top seven of those advance to the finals.
Even though the Bulldogs are making history by simply making the voyage, they don’t wanna leave empty handed. MGCCC Head Cheer Coach Christy Bowman said, “This is we’re making history. Our first year ever in Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College history to make it to go to nationals for cheerleading and so our saying has been making history. We’re going for the experience, we’re going to win, but we also want to bring something back to the school to prove all the hard work that’s been going on.”
Cheer Captain Kimmy Day said, “A lot of hard work has gone into this. We’ve given up parts of our summer, Thanksgiving, even Christmas, but it’s been such a great experience and a journey to be able to get this far and say that we made it.”
Gulf Coast takes to the mat at 11:21 central time on Saturday with finals running about an hour after that. The competition can be streamed online at ESPN.com.
