Man arrested in connection with fatal Lorraine Road hit and run
On May 29, 2021, at approximately 1:05 a.m., the Gulfport Police Department responded to a hit and run in the area of Lorraine Road and Intraplex Parkway.
Upon arrival, officers observed two victims, a male, later identified as Jason Stone, and a female, identified as Cassie Bowman, lying deceased in the northbound lane of Lorraine Road. Further northbound on Lorraine Road, a single motorcycle was located lying in the roadway. Officers observed evidence on scene that suggested the motorcycle had been struck from behind just before the intersection of Lorraine Road and Intraplex Parkway, before being dragged northbound on Lorraine Road, along with the two victims. Detectives determined the suspect vehicle, a 2019-2021 Dodge Ram 1500, struck the motorcycle and fled the scene.
On June 9, 2021, the Gulfport Police Department arrested 39-year-old Josef Randal Murph and charged him with one count of Hindering Prosecution. Murph’s bond was set at $10,000.
On June 8, 2021, the Gulfport Police Department arrested 25-year-old Taylor Marie Habina and charged her with one count of Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Death. Habina’s bond was set at $75,000.
On June 9, 2021, the Gulfport Police Department arrested 46-year-old Jason Christopher Smith and charged him with one count of Accessory After the Fact and one count of Tampering with Physical Evidence. Smith’s bond was set at $100,000.
After booking and processing, Habina and Smith were transported to the Harrison County Adult Detention Center to be held in lieu of their bond.
Gulfport Police are still currently looking for the second vehicle involved in the Hit and Run. The vehicle is a dark colored SUV with recent heavy front-end damage. The vehicle appears to have dark colored rims.
