“Our Love Affair with Baseball” Luncheon
The first of the only two white baseball players to make the Biloxi Dodgers’ roster says he never felt like an outcast at bat.
Former Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College stand-out Cliff Kirkland was the speaker for this week’s “Our Love Affair with Baseball” luncheon in Biloxi.
Kirkland shared stories of his time playing shortstop and hitting for a semi-pro team from the Negro Leagues’ Southern Division with the crowd at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum.
He tells News 25 his six years on the Biloxi Dodgers tested his skill and abilities as a player.“Certainly didn’t feel like trailblazers. I wouldn’t want to be characterized as that in any way. It just turned out that way, but it was a great experience. The players welcomed us. The coaches did. I played against a lot of guys whose talents were the same as I had in Division I baseball.”
