Local shelters, animals benefit from #BettyWhiteChallenge
The Humane Society of South Mississippi has collected more than $10,000 in donations in two days — thanks to the Betty White Challenge
The effort stemmed from a viral social media trend that asked people to donate at least $5 to animal shelters in honor of the late actress and animal advocate, who died December 31, 2021.
The Jackson County Animal Shelter received more than $1,000 in donations.
While the challenge officially was held Monday, on what would have been the Golden Girl’s 100th birthday, donations continued to pile up Tuesday.
HSSM will use a portion of the donations for the “Have A Heart” Fund, which will cover the treatments for all heartworm-positive dogs that get adopted from now until February 14.
“Their treatment can be can really be costly, which turns potential adopters away, but being that we have these donations through the Have a Heart fund and now that their treatment is sponsored, they can go through treatment at our wellness treatment for free,” said HSSM’s Katie King. “We’re just honored to be part of her legacy and doing good work in her name.”
