Local Facebook groups brings joy and alcohol

Bringing in a little light-hearted fun to these stressful times is the goal of the local Facebook group called “It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere.”

‘It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere’ Founder Jessica Knapp said, “It’s basically ding-dong-ditch, but with alcohol. They run up. They knock on your door. They run away as fast as they can or they kind of hang out to see your reaction or take a shot with you.”  Knapp started the Facebook group in late April as a way to bring people together during quarantine. She had no idea that just a few months later the group would soon reach nearly 2,000 members. “We have been making new friends. People have been getting out of their house during this time. It’s almost like new sisterhoods have been made and it’s not just for women, it’s for men as well, but it is a more women prominent group.”

This group has done more than just help people form life-long friendships, it’s also helped many local businesses during these unprecedented times. Sharie Williams is the owner of ‘High Proof Liquor’ in Biloxi. She says this Facebook group has had a spillover effect, significantly increasing her sales. “With all of the events being canceled because of COVID, we got a little nervous because we are right here on the beach and all of that tourist traffic is one of our main sources of income. When the group hit, it just skyrocketed our sales for us which was absolutely amazing.”

A countless amount of liquor stores throughout the Coast have joined in on the fun. Some, like High Proof, even offer specials to group members. “We offer a discount for the 5 o’clock group. So, if you are a part of the group you know how to get your discount.”

To join the group you must be at least 21 years old. You can find it by searching ‘It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere’ on Facebook.
