Labors of Love

It’s a labor of love born out of loss as South Mississippians use tragedy and music to help keep others alive in their own special ways. News 25’s Kristen Durand takes us behind the scenes of these labors of love and shows how you can also lend a helping hand.
In May of 2013, Jennifer and Matthew Cartwright were decorating in anticipation of their son’s fourth birthday celebration, a joyous occasion that would never unfold after suddenly losing their precious son, Pierce Allen, to an accidental drowning. “It was so easy for us to imagine him as a doctor because he liked to help people,” said Jennifer Cartwright, “He liked to do things like that and I kind of always thought that he would be a doctor and he would be saving people.”
And he is saving people. After Pierce’s death, the Cartwright’s donated their son’s heart to the Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency, MORA, and together they created the Pierce Allen Cartwright Community Day. They are celebrating this event for the third year in a row on September 26th at First Baptist Church in Ocean Springs. “We have MORA there, ready to sign up people to be organ donors. The Red Cross is there doing a blood drive,” said Jennifer.
Another charitable event in the community will be on September 20th. The non-profit organization Melodic Outreach, along with The Shed in Ocean Springs, will band together to raise money for cancer patients through the power of music. Leslie George, president of Melodic Outreach, said, “If you can’t work because you have cancer, what are you going to do? So, that’s where we come in, you know, we want to get together, hold these events and raise money to help those people in the community who have cancer but can’t work.”
Melodic Outreach is a new 501 3-C organization and this is their first event. “We have several bands that will be coming in through the day,” said George, “I think we have four at this event and they donate their time and talent. Everybody does and is just giving it back.”
Because giving back not only makes a difference but could save a life.
