Humane Society of South Mississippi workers say fireworks can overwhelm dogs, triggering fear that often causes them to run from home.

After New Year’s Eve, shelters report a spike in intake as dogs break loose during the celebrations.

To help ease that anxiety, experts recommend using calming sprays available at local pet stores.
