Holiday Travel Expected to be Highest Since 2007

Air travel for Thanksgiving this year is expected to be at its highest level since 2007, and the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport is no exception. Executive Director, Clay Williams, says the airport sees a bump in business every year.

AAA says this year, the average Thanksgiving traveler will put on 549 miles and spend an average of $573. With the heavy holiday traffic starting this weekend, airport directors ask travelers to arrive early to allow more time for delays.

Williams says, “Thanksgiving, it’s spread out a little more. Oftentimes, you’ll see people leaving the Friday before, sometimes Tuesday before, so it comes over various days, but again, there are fewer carriers and they’ve exercised seat reductions, so usually your planes are full.”

Williams encourages travelers who need to book flights to do so as soon as possible, as flights are filling up fast, and with severe weather expected this weekend, airport directors ask fliers to check in with their airlines before coming to the airport for their flight.
