High speed chase turns deadly in Stone County

An update to the story we brought you last night about a high speed chase that ended in a deadly shooting in Stone County.

The man killed in that pursuit has been identified as 25-year-old Miles Dylan Cooper of Gulfport, according to Stone County Coroner Wayne Flurry.

Crime scene tape marks the spot where the two-county chase, which began in north Biloxi, up along Highway 15 in north Harrison County, crossing over the Stone County line and ending there when Cooper’s vehicle rolled into a ditch after a shootout with law enforcement officers.

A number of residents either heard or caught a glimpse of the chase, including at least one local business owner. Ramsey Springs General Store Owner Andres Mari said, “We got all startled when some sirens came by and we thought it was just something sporadic, but all of a sudden, we started seeing more sirens and more sirens. It must have been 10 or 15 cars that went by and we were very concerned of what’s going on.”

The chase reportedly began yesterday evening after authorities tried to make a traffic stop for what was believed to be a carjacking. Since this was an officer involved shooting, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will be handling the investigation.
