Harrison County woman finds daughter attempting to smother 9-week-old infant, sheriff says

SAUCIER, Miss. (WXXV) — A Harrison County woman is facing felony child abuse charges after she was reportedly found smothering her infant daughter.

According to Harrison County Sheriff Troy Peterson, 23-year-old Simona Somers was arrested and charged with felonious child abuse Saturday.

Simona’s mother alleges that she walked into Simona’s bedroom where she discovered Simona completely covering her nine-week-old infant daughter’s head and face with a thick blanket, attempting to smother her.

Ambulance service American Medical Response (AMR) responded to the scene and determined the child did not suffer any obvious injuries.

The Mississippi Department of Human Services also responded to the home and took custody of the child.

Somers was taken to the Harrison County Adult Detention Facility. Her bond is set at $50,000.
