Harrison County Sheriff Troy Peterson will not seek third term in office

Harrison County Sheriff Troy Peterson announced Wednesday he will not seek a third term in office.

Peterson said in a press release that he will serve out his current term until 2024 and then retire. He has nearly 40 years in law enforcement.

Two people already have declared their intention to run for sheriff — Major Louis Elias Jr. and Matt Haley.

“I have been humbled and grateful to have served with the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office for 30 years,” Peterson said in a press release. “My retirement will give me 37 years in the system, all at the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office.

“This is home to me. It’s where I started my career and it’s where I will finish. I’ve had the privilege every day to work with men and women who are courageous, without fear, talented, encouraging determined and brave; it’s those I will miss the most.”
