Harrison County School District preparing for virtual learning

Regular classes and the virtual learning option will start August 6^th for students in the Harrison County School District.

While they are still waiting on further guidance from MDE, since April the school district has been preparing multiple plans for restarting school this fall, including the virtual learning option.

Harrison County School District spent about $100,000 on a learning management system called ‘Schoology’ and ordered 2,000 laptops.

However, the laptops had to be reordered because the devices did not meet the guidelines that were released by MDE on July 24^th.

The district has not yet received any federal funding for reimbursement of expenses that the district has already spent in preparation for the new school year.  Harrison County School District Superintendent Roy Gill said, “This is ever changing, day-by-day. We have no idea what’s to come. We just want to make sure that everyone understands that our administration or teachers are working endless hours to provide the best education possible whether it’s face-to-face or virtually.”

It will be an estimated $10 million for Harrison County School District to purchase laptops for their students and staff. The Mississippi Department of Education is currently providing guidance to begin the purchasing process.
