Gulfport Lady Admirals go back-to-back in 6A Title Game thriller

Five would enter, three high school teams from the Gulf Coast would leave with MHSAA state championships over the weekend.

Starting with the Lady Admirals and their quest to cap off the best two-year run-in school history.

Coming in with just one loss over the last two years and that one loss to Ocean Springs, the only game they’ve had to play from behind this season.

That is until Saturday, defending 6A state champions looking to run it back against Madison Central.

Lady Admirals take this one 2-1 as they go back-to-back for their third state crown in program history and perhaps the most dominant run for any team in school history. 43 wins, one loss, six ties during that stretch and this year alone outscoring opponents 101-6, all culminating with yet another shiny gold ball.

Head Coach Chris Pryor said, “I couldn’t have scripted that. I promise you; no one thinks about going back-to-back. A lot of people just hope to get to the state championship. For us to go back-to-back, and one loss in 50 games, I’ll take it.”

Kate Smith said, “I had a feeling all day that we were going to win, and even after they scored, we did not stop fighting and that’s what our team has been like all season, so I’m just so proud of everyone and the dynamic duo stepped out tonight.”

Abby Badurak said, “It really is just about always working hard and never giving up no matter what. That was the first time we’ve been down all season, and to be able to come from behind and keep working hard, it was really awesome.”

Gulfport now has three championships in five title game appearances.
